Most barbershops treat kids as an afterthought. The barber rushes through the cut, the kid leaves stressed, and the parent vows to find somewhere "better next time."

At Viking, kids are a normal part of every day. Carlos in particular has built a reputation with Uptown families — he's the one parents request when their child is shy, squirmy, or coming in for their first haircut ever.

We never force a haircut. If your child needs a break, they get one. If clipper sounds are too much, we switch to scissors. If they want to sit on your lap, that's fine. The goal is for them to leave smiling and ask to come back. Same quality cut as our adult service — just adapted for the audience.

First haircut?

We've done hundreds. Here's how it goes.

A baby's first haircut is a big moment. Some parents save the hair, some cry, some panic when their kid starts squirming. We've seen it all.

Book ahead or walk in — Saturdays are busiest. For first cuts, we recommend booking a morning slot when your child is fresh.

Tell us "it's their first" — we set up differently. Cape over your lap, child on you, parent holds hands or a favorite toy.

We start slow — scissors first usually, never the buzzer until the child is settled. Sometimes the cut takes 20 minutes, sometimes 5. We adapt.

Lock for the lock-of-hair — bring a baggie if you want to save the first lock. We'll set it aside before sweeping up.

Photo at the end — most parents take a "first haircut" photo in the chair. We'll help with the angle if you want.

What age can my child come for their first haircut?
Any age. We do first haircuts for babies as young as 6 months, and we have specific techniques for keeping them comfortable. Parents are welcome to stay close — the child can sit on your lap if needed. Most kids do great after the first few minutes.
My kid is shy or squirmy. Can the barbers handle it?
Yes — this is something we hear all the time and our barbers are good at it. Carlos especially has a reputation for patience with kids. We never force a haircut. If your child needs breaks, we give them. If a clipper sound is too much, we switch to scissors. The goal is for them to leave happy and want to come back.
Do you have Spanish-speaking barbers for kids?
Sí. Todos nuestros barberos hablan español (Carlos, David, Edwin). Si tu niño se siente más cómodo en español, solo dinos al reservar. — All our barbers speak Spanish. Tell us when you book and your child will be served in the language they're most comfortable with.
How long does a kids haircut take?
30 minutes for the appointment slot. The actual cut is usually 15-20 minutes — the rest is for the kid to settle in, take any breaks needed, and for the consultation with parent. We don't rush kids.
What's included in the $30 kids haircut?
Full haircut to whatever style you and your child agree on (fade, taper, classic, scissor cut, mohawk if you both want), neckline and sideburn line-up, light styling with kid-friendly product if you want, and a clean send-off. Same quality as our adult $40 cut — just a different price for kids 11 and under.
Do you have toys, TVs, or anything to distract kids?
We have a TV that plays kid-friendly content on request, and the chair faces a mirror so your child can watch what's happening. Some kids relax with a phone or tablet from a parent — that's totally fine. We focus on the cut, not on a circus environment.
Can both my child and I get a haircut at the same time?
Yes — book two back-to-back appointments or with two different barbers at the same time. Many parents do this on Saturdays. We can have your child cut while you wait for your men's haircut, or both at once if we have two chairs open.
What about kids with sensory issues or autism?
Tell us when you book or when you arrive — we adjust. Lower lights, quieter clippers, longer time slots, breaks whenever needed, parent stays close. We have regular clients on the spectrum and the barbers know how to keep things calm. No judgment, just a good cut.
